Nobel Lauriate's wall featuring a blippers's dad
Blipper Artist Annie (aka The Artist's Eye) is the daughter of Nobel Laureate Edwin McMillan (far right). A physicist, he co-won (with http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/chemistry/laureates/1951/mcmillan-facts.html) the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1951 "for their discoveries in the chemistry of the transuranium elements". Edwin co-discovered Neptunium and Plutonium. Why chemistry for a physicist? Elements are the building blocks all things - all chemicals - and everything is chemicals. Element discoveries are, essentially, basic nuclear chemistry.
This wall of honour is one of many for Nobel Laureates in disciplines other hand physics where physicists won such as chemistry, mathematics, etc. at the American Institute of Physics (see other blips this week) where I am doing research on Robert J. Van de Graaff - father to blipper John Van de Graaff.
It's been a very good week of research. One more day on Monday at AIP then it's time for vacation with Linda.
