Small Leaved Lime.

Tilia cordata

Deciduous tree growing up to 40 metres. This one is thought to be 700 or 800 years old. It  has several large trunks all coming from a single root system.
The flowers have a rich scent which is very attractive to bees and gives rise to a much valued honey.
It is considered an indicator of ancient woodland. Analysis of pollen shows that the trees were present in South Lakeland over 3,000 years ago and in some areas were a dominant species.
This particular tree is near Silverdale but a good many are found in the Witherslack basin on the north side of the River Kent. That area will be well known to several Cumbrian Blippers.
