Elephant Hawk-Moth

My neighbour opposite invited me round again early this morning to see what they’d caught in their moth trap. For me the highlight was the elephant hawk-moth. I’ve added an extra of it taken side on, such a fab colour. I’ve also added a collage showing clockwise from top left: oak eggar; poplar hawk-moth; peppered moth; brown-tail moth; magpie flat. An uncomfortably hot and sunny day at 30C.

Well what a mess the worldwide IT outage has been, the biggest ever. Firstly how did Crowdstrike allow an update to be distributed without adequate testing? Secondly how did this go worldwide all at once? Thirdly why didn’t Microsoft have adequate arrangements with Crowdstrike to ensure their software changes didn’t adversely affect Windows (& vice versa). And will governments now finally wake up to the complete reliance vital organisations have on a small number of IT organisations. They should regulate to ensure adequate contingency is in place for such failures, plus assess key dependencies across critical infrastructure operations (including for cloud computing) and how this could be mitigated.
