Hot Friday Walk

Every now and then, my friend Isa and I manage to go for a longer walk on a Friday afternoon. Today we went for a 10 kilometer hike in the Taunus hills, hoping for less heat up there.

But the difference wasn’t big - even in the hills the temperature went up to 31°C in the shade, and even more scorching in the sun. We took lots of breaks and drank plenty of water, watched butterflies and birds, walked through fields, healthy beech forest and dead spruce forest, enjoyed the late summer flowers, and took many photos - see the extra.

After the walk we had planned to eat in a local pizzeria. We had checked their website for opening times, and it said “open today”, so it was really disappointing to find a note at their door, “Closed until August 15”. Obviously that website doesn’t get updated. We tried the next village  - no luck - and finally drove to a bigger hotel and restaurant where we got food and drinks. But it is a rather posh venue, and we felt out of place in our hiking gear, so we didn’t stay for long.
