Thanes

Woke early and got straight back into reading the novel I started yesterday (The Long Weekend by Gilly Macmillan). Typical holiday read…murder mystery with a twisty plot and a nameless murderer writing in the first person. I ended up getting up and sitting in the cottage’s entrance in a little patch of sunlight with a cup of tea to finish it.
After that and breakfast the sun had disappeared so I got changed and we headed to Cawdor Castle founded in the late 14th century to take a look. We had audio guides and it was interesting inside as there was a good mix of art and furniture including really quite modern pieces and a kitchen used and remodelled several times between the 1930s to 1970s was quite a sight above the 17th century one.
We had some tasty home made Scotch broth (me) and quiche (S) then went to look round the gardens and woodland. They were gorgeous…profusion of flowers, many in quite a wild style, and lovely colour palette with primarily whites and blues/purples, with some orange and yellow as contrasts. There was an orchard, a maze, quite a lot of modern sculptures and water features. Shame it was cloudy the whole time but it was at least pleasantly warm.
We drove to Nairn to take a look but decided there wasn’t anything to stop for, but picked up some strawberries at a farm shop to eat on our way home…very sweet and good flavour.
We ended up getting a cup of tea and heading for some reading/snoozing time….the upstairs in this cottage is much warmer and cozier than downstairs.
We walked over to Sutor’s Creek again for supper, this time to try their delicious pizzas, and i had the lemon posset for dessert which was lovely.
Home and some nonsense TV before an early night…bit of a lazy day but as A would say that’s what holidays are for!
