The complete shutdown of that mainline allows a thorough rebuilding of rails, platforms, signals, and overhead power lines. All hope to have less vulnerability of failures afterwards, on that line as well as in the whole network.

Whilst long distance trains are diverted to parallel routes, the regional service between Frankfurt and Mannheim is conducted by bus.
