How to save a life
She tells me she has just seen a big, beautiful butterfly deliberately, suicidally fly itself into the swimming pool. I go to have a look, with the fear of seeing it die, or simply sadly dead, but it's still struggling, so I rush to get help in the form of a plastic fish spatula, and lift it out and onto the side in the vain hope that it will dry out. Immediately it lurches back towards the water, but I talk it out of ending its existence and let it lay in the sun. Maybe it will die a slow death from chlorine poisoning, but for now there is a happy ending.
