Red phone box
Despite their ability to send texts, voice messages and email these iconic red telephone boxes are in decline. The apps are somewhat limited and the camera function is at best mediocre.
Featured in many movies including Local Hero and You've Been Trumpted they are recognised throughout the world as symbols of all that is best in British design.
This example is a K6 and it sits at the head of the Spynie Canal where it drains into the River Lossie at Lossiemouth.
Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott for a post office competition in 1923 and topped with a dome reminiscent of the Dulwich Picture Gallery, the Post Office chose to make Scott's winning entry in cast iron (Scott had suggested mild steel) and to paint it red (Scott had suggested silver, with a "greeny blue" interior)
One of the original wooden versions submitted by Scott survives in the left entrance arch to the Royal Academy.
