A Famous Cat
It was a glorious day in Warrington. We walked along the Bridgewater Canal to Grappenhall, a beautiful village with an ancient sandstone church, St Wilfred’s ( extra ), and two lovely old pubs. We had a walk around the church, and were given an informal talk by the sides man, who was born in the village. He pointed out the Cheshire Cat, and its connection to Alice in Wonderland. We had lunch in the Parr Arms which is next to the church
Visible on the tower is a relief sculpture of a 'Cheshire Cat' which may have inspired the young Charles Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll), whose father was vicar of the nearby Daresbury church.
A perfect day. The Parr Arms is a Robinson’s Pub. Pint of the day was Cumbria Way. Bird of the day was a heron. Boat of the day was Wizard, owned and run by the Warrington Disability Partnership to give disabled people, their carers, families and friends a day out. See Extra.
