Swinside Stone Circle
During a recent stay down in Eskdale we happened upon a number of small stone circles above Boot. Previously we had tried to find Swinside Stone Circle down near Broughton-in Furness but had abandoned due my fitness and a lack of clarity on the exact location.
On the 17th July we went back and located it. It is a complete circle although some stones have fallen inwards, much quieter than Castlerigg due to the more remote nature. It's amazing to think that at around 3000BC this is older than the pyramids. We spent some time sitting around trying to come to terms with the place. It has an alternative name - Sunkenkirk. Kirk, Scottish for Church. The legend is that as they tried to build the church from stone the devil sunk them to prevent it.
In extras is a shot of the Duddon estuary from Great Paddy Crag, as we were this far south we thought we would knock off a few more Birketts in the nice weather before heading home.
