Poms
The Morpeth Arms in Millbank, Pimlico, London, has underground cellars which open used to open onto the Thames. From here convicts on their way to Australia were kept, the put onto the transports. Legend has it that this is where the term Pom originated - prisoner of Millbank. However there are loads of other ideas - from the convicts arriving in Oz being the colour of Pomegranates , or from the French 'pommes' as the British ate so many potatoes.
I like Prisoner of Millbank though, especially as directly across the river is the HQ of MI5.
We'd been to Tate Britain to see a Lowry exhibition. Absolutely first class. He was a rent collector all his life and a Tory but painted quite harrowing working class scenes. A complex character.
