Betting on angels

Persistent rain scuppered my plans for today. Instead here is the magnificent east window from the church of St Barnabas in the neighbouring Herefordshire village of Brampton Bryan. The church is unusual, being almost as wide as it is long, yet it has no central pillars. It has a superb triple hammerbeam roof. This is one of only half a dozen churches built in England during the Commonwealth of Oliver Cromwell (the original 12th century church having been destroyed in the Civil War). My interest was, of course, the stained glass windows. The five light east window is by James Powell & Sons, installed in 1888. Apparently it was paid for by a bet on the 1887 St Leger horse race.
