Clarice Cliff tea set

This tea set, a gift from M, also includes a saucer, and a cake plate which was mended. It is missing a cup.

Clarice Cliff (1899-1972) was an English ceramic artist and designer who was active from 1922 to 1963. She studied at the Royal College of Art.

From 1916 she worked at the Wilkinson Pottery in Newport, Burslem. The 'Bizarre' stamp was used on her wares from 1928-1936 (see extra). The stamp also includes the words 'hand painted' and my set is just that, done with on-glaze enamel colour. You can see the brush strokes in some of the colours in my photo, and in the pieces the brush strokes are also evident in the dark green leaves.

From 1929 Cliff's painted decorations were more geometric, in the Art Deco style. My set is typical of her earlier work.

Thanks for hosting BikerBear. Happy weekend to you all.
