Today the Guernsey Stolpersteines are being laid…

The second one is just up the road from here so in the interests of Blipfoto I went along to watch.
A round hole had been prepared ready to slip the square stolpersteine into place and secure it with cement. Apparently the first one went smoothly but the pavement in Victoria Road is a double layer of asphalt/tarmac! The poor man finishing off the hole had to borrow a stone drill to make the hole deep enough; with the eyes of the small group of about 15 to 20 people watching every small piece of stone being dislodged. Just to add to the chaos Victoria Road is narrow with cars parked all the way up one side of the road and traffic taking no prisoners as it sped up the road. We had to keep reminding people to get back on the footpath. The locals will understand that trying to get John Gollop out of harm’s way onto the footpath is about as easy as herding treacle!
But all came well in the end with no casualties.
For those not familiar with Stolperstein you can read about them here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stolperstein#:~:text=A%20Stolperstein%20(pronounced%20%5B%CB%88%CA%83t%C9%94lp%C9%90%CB%8C%CA%83ta%C9%AAn%5D,and%20metaphorically%20'stumbling%20block'.
