Visiting Kake
Pronounced 'cake', is a small city with a population of 533 (2022). Its name comes from the Tlingit language and loosely translated means 'dawn', mouth of dawn or 'opening of daylight'. The region of Kake has been inhabited by the Tlingit indigenous people for thousands of years. Salmon fishing is an important industry. The citizens of Kake are very proud of their history and way of life. The waters around Kake are summer feeding grounds for humpback whales. Sadly, the weather turned stormy and we weren't able to learn as much about the area as I had hoped to. I would enjoy a second visit someday.
