Airhead Day

Some people love the BMW flat twin motorcycles, others berate their basic design. Well, today was the day for those who own or like them to gather at the infamous Sammy Miller motorcycle museum in Hampshire.
If you make a two-cylinder engine there are only so many ways you can arrange the cylinders, and BMW chose to have them poking out sideways. For decades they were cooled by air (hence "airheads"), later ones being cooled by oil and currently by water.

I always liked the colours in the picture and was doubly pleased to these well-preserved examples from 1973 to 1976. Although most bikes looked in excellent condition, almost none had been restored: it proved that they were well made even if not the fastest or most stylish!
