The Amazing Song
...of the Sedge Warbler! I read an article by Simon Barnes in The Times yesterday entitled For sedge warblers, every performance is a premiere which talked about the incredible song of the Sedge Warbler. He spoke about hearing the song of an unpaired male bird in Norfolk who mustn't have had a consort this spring. The male was constantly practising his song in the hope that he would attract a mate, but what is astonishing is the fact that every song is totally unique. The song is complex and highly varied and never repeated in the same way. As Mr Barnes said in the article, there's hope that the Norfolk male will be a step ahead of the other males next spring after his constant practising throughout the summer, and I hope that this is also the case for this Sedge Warbler whose premieres I enjoyed listening to at Coombe Hill!
