Fancy Boats
Just popping in for a quick hello!
Thought this would make an interesting blip -- some of the visitors to our harbor here in Maine this week included these three vessels with fascinating provenance.
The top photo shows 102' long Blue Guitar -- a beautiful yacht which arrived fresh from London for a visit in Boothbay Harbor. One of her owners is (or was? -- I can't find information as to whether he still owns her) none other than Slowhand himself, Eric Clapton! For one wild moment, I did think about sending Mr. W over to serenade on the dock with his ukulele!
The two boats in the lower picture show in the background the monster yacht Sixth Sense owned by the chairman of the Carnival Cruise Line, Micky Arison. A modest, unassuming 243' in length, she is apparently worth a cool $90 million, and chews up a further $9 million annually in running costs. Yikes. In the foreground is the gorgeous yacht Eros. A "mere" 115' in length, she was built in 1939, and one of her former owners was Greek shipping tycoon Stavros Niarchos. In May of 1962, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain spent some of their honeymoon aboard Eros. Niarchos had gifted the use of her along with his private Greek island, Spetsopoula, to the royal newlyweds.
Check back to this spot at the end of August if you're interested -- we're off on another maritime adventure, and I'll be happy to bring anyone who wants to join in along for the ride!
