The Tsar Poplar

a.k.a. the biggest tree in Finland. In a town called Heinola.

There's another record breaking tree in another city, but it's the tallest tree. Which makes me thing that we have pretty exciting attractions here (ironically said).

I just needed to get my mind on something else than work or home, so we visited a neighboring town. We visited a public park with open air art: sculptures. That was great, but so many pieces with puns in the name that it oddly got overwhelmed and I felt that I could not concentrate on them anymore. I think the park needs to be seen in two visits.

Tsar poplar is the largest individual tree in Finland. It grows in Heinola beach park. Its species is Tsar poplar (Populus × petrowskiana). The height of the Tsar poplar is 34.5 meters, the diameter of the crown is 23 meters and the circumference measured at chest height is 6.37 meters.

The volume of the tree is more than 30 cubic meters. The volume calculation includes only the main trunk and the seven giant branches of the tree, each of which is the size of a normal tree. Branches branching off from large branches have not been counted in. Heinola's tsar's poplar survived the Kymijoki flood of 1901.

The exact age of the Heinola gigantic tree is not known. Estimates range from 125 to 175 per year. They don't dare to drill the tree for the annual ring sample, for fear of mold.
