‘A Stitch in Time Saves Nine’
How I wish I had heeded this well-known proverb when I put my flat on the market a year ago! I should have started getting rid of the stuff stashed there a lot earlier on in the proceedings. Now I’ve still got quite a lot to sort through when all I really want to do is get on with renovating the bungalow. I bet most of the toppling stack in my garage will eventually be gone to elsewhere - it certainly can’t stay in there indefinitely! According to a BBC News article from a few years back the saying basically means it's better to address an issue right away, to stop it becoming a much bigger one later on. It was first recorded back in 1723, and of course it's a sewing reference. The idea is that sewing up a small rip with one stitch means the tear is less likely to get bigger and then need more stitches later on.
Thank you to isbi for hosting Tiny Tuesday in July, with the theme this week of "something to illustrate a saying or proverb". My blip is of a tiny sewing machine just over one inch long, sitting on a miniscule trinket box. If you’re lucky you might fit a few little shirt buttons in there!
