a lifetime burning

Martin

I drove Cathy to Swanage to meet up with friends and took the opportunity to drop into Arne.  Boy was it hot - somewhere around 29C  - and because it was hot there wasn't a lot on show.  What there was, was then tricky to shoot given the substantial heat haze.  I gave up at 5pm and went for a well deserved shower and beer - in that order.

Although this is a House Martin (the tail being the essential differentiator between swallows and martins) I had to look twice as the slighty reddish chin had me double checking my field guides - I'd normally expect an obvious white throat.  Other shots of the bird do make it clear that the rest of the underparts are white rather than the creamier colour of a swallow.
