Castleton
Day out around Castleton today. This morning we visited the "Devil's Arse' cave and had a very entertaining tour. It was made more fun as there were a group of scouts with us on the tour, and the tour guide enjoyed getting into character. The final extra is from the cave where we had a view of some rock under ultraviolet light.
The name apparently comes from the fact that when floods recede, there are parts of the rock formations that make a "farting" sound. It's been like this a long time, and this phenomena is mentioned in the doomsday book.
The cave enterance was used for many years for making rope, and we had a demonstration of some of the skill that is involved,
After lunch, the group split to do various walks. Ours included a good view of Peveril Castle (first extra). We also took a diversion up a little of Winnats Pass to have a look at the view without having to drive it. The view around the first corner is in the second extra, and the third is of a man determined to record his family drive through the pass!
The main blip is of Mam Tor peak.
For dinner we went back to the very excellent 1530 restaurant. I think most of us had a dish in mind from the previous visit earlier in the week, but they threw us a curveball by announcing it was new menu day!
