Villa de Mme Ephrussy de Rothschild
Visited by my daughter and family. It is a gorgeous place on the Mediterranean Coast; the property next door used to belong to the King of Belgium. Each time I visited Nice or Cannes, visiting this villa was a special joy for me. I loved the exquisite Interieurs and the luscious gardens. Always wondered from where the tremendous wealth of this family came from.
Last year our little Bookclub read the book about the women of the Rothchilds.
The origin of the wealth was actually coming from the only trade that was for Jews allowed to do: money lending. But the first of this dynasty of money lenders in the 16 hundreds made friends with kings and other nobility ( himself living in the Ghetto of Frankfurt), to help them fight wars against each other.
This Mr. Rothschild hat 8 or 9 children and the parents had a very restrictive family law: the boys had to work in dad’s business, the girls had to marry someone with money.
So this picture was taken by my son in law
And it brought back good memories.
I spent the day, waiting in vain for another delivery from Lowe’s. In between a short visit to the Gym.
