Its the Way It Is

Spuds

Thank you for lovely comments on my last blip.

So to re-cap that evening, I cooked myself some food on little stove, watched some limpics in the tv room, read some of my book (the complete history of American cinema) and chatted to some Dutch campers and fully enjoying the camping experience in Gailey Bay.

Bedded down in the Logan for the night and fell fast asleep.

At 1.30am I got a call from my mammy’s nursing home to say she had had bad fall and concussed and possible broken leg. They rang me because she was refusing to get into the ambulance (imagine it! 2 burly but kind para medics versus 100 year old feisty Irish woman). They let her talk to me as follows:

The Mammy: Jean they’re making me get into an ambulance and there’s not a thing wrong with me. You know I hate fuss.

Me: listen here to me now. You better get into that ambulance or I will go bananas. I’ll drive up to Dublin through the night and won’t be in the best of form.

So she got into the ambulance (she knows I rarely get annoyed).

So after that, sleep eluded me and at first light, in the rain, I packed up my gear and drove back to Dublin. They took good care of her in Vincent’s and she was discharged last evening. No bone break but bad blow to head and internal infection.

I’m back in Dublin and had to cut short my tour (I bought this car specially for my trip) as planned (but now cancelled):

Gailey Bay one night

Mulranny (with son and family) and out to Seals Cave Achill Mayo (3 nights)

Strandhill (one night) to see Sneaky Tequilas and BUGS concert

Enniskillen (to stay in their sweetie Shepherds Hut in Blaney Camping)

Belfast (to meet friend and do some sketching in Fern House in Botanics)

I have cancelled all my bookings but might nip up to Norn Iron to re coup some of my hols if my mammy improves somewhat over next few days.

Anyhoo a friend who owns a flat in Bray with balcony invited me to watch air show

and that’s where I am now. I boiled these potatoes to make spud salad as contribution to lovely food she prepared for a few friends.

The weather is lovely - food is great - and hopefully the Mammy lives to fight another day. But I am close by and will go see her again this evening.

Sometimes plans don’t work out and you have to go with the flow.

Le dea-mhéin,

Jean
