My Breezeway Garden

A very murky day here today. The marine layer has been lurking much of the day, although the sun was out midday. I did a lot of watering this morning - yesterday's heat really dried things up. I'm watering for my neighbor too, who is away this weekend....but he'll water for me when I'm way next week!

I did a lot of work today - finished up my class and then started concentrating on the beach trip. I'll leave right after class on Monday, so will have to be completely ready to go by tomorrow night! Of course anything that is forgotten can be purchased, and it's quite a short trip and only a 2 hour drive. Easy peasy!

The breezeway garden is a very odd thing. The breezeway runs between the HOA driveway and my front door. On either side are my garages (yes two!). In between the garages/breezeway and house is my courtyard. The gate between the breezeway and the courtyard keeps the kitties contained in the courtyard...it's completely safe for them and they LOVE it!

The breezeway is covered with translucent corrugated rigid plastic, which lets in light but no rain. And the front of the garden faces west, so whatever is growing down there will get fried in the summer afternoon sun. The rest of it is quite shady. So no water, too much sun on one end and not enough on the other. But I like challenges!

I planted a few things last year, the rest this year, so it's very young. There's a Fatsia 'Spider's Web' in the right rear and a clematis growing on a very cool trellis on the back left. A lot of light comes in through the garage window there, so there's oddly enough light for it.

You can't see the jasmine that I've planted on either side of the gate that leads into the breezeway. It bloomed beautifully this year - it's our native Jasmine - Jasmine polyanthum. The coleus I started from cuttings from last year's plants and the hellebores were past-season half price plants at Fred Meyer - there's three of them. So at least there's some evergreen plants. One of the most challenging places I have gardened!
