Spawning Salmon
This is the sculpture entitled " Spawning Salmon" by Michael Liesener.
Presented by Wetherby Arts Festival and Wetherby Council, to celebrate The Millennium 2000.
It is by the weir on the river Wharfe, along side the old mill wheel, which has also been preserved.
The bridge dates from the 13 century, rebuilt in the 17th c, widened in 1773, and again in 1826.
It used to carry the Great North Road, and was mid- way between London and Edinburgh, until a by pass for the A1 was built in the 1960's.
Our walk today was one of two halves.
Starting in Wetherby, we walked along the river to Linton, and Collingham, then back to Wetherby for a picnic lunch by the river.
A beautiful summer's day. So nice to see families sat by the river.
Dogs splashing in the water, children paddling , and some young men even swimming!
The pathways were lined with numerous wild flowers, and lots of butterflies fluttering in and out.
Just a faint breeze blowing which kept the heat down, and made it more pleasant for walking.
Then after lunch some of the group, including us, walked along the river in the other direction to Flint Mill Grange, and back along the old Church Fenton/Harrogate railway line. (Now a pathway for walkers and cyclists)
The photo of the beautiful field of poppies I have put on my blip folio, along with some other photos I took today. SEE HERE blipfolio
When we arrived back at the car, the band were playing, and it was wonderful to see so many people sat round on the grass, enjoying the music.
Such a typical English scene , which I'm glad to say is still popular with young and old alike.
We really enjoyed the day, especially seeing our friends which we haven't seen since May.
Very pleased that England won the test!
Yorkshire beat Derbyshire.
Chris Froome won the stage of the Tour de France to the top of Mt Ventoux.
( we recorded the race as it went through "our" part of France. Lovely to see all the lavender fields!)
MrC very pleased. A good day all round!
