A day in the life

Witches

At home, I cut the grass and did some playing during the day but in the afternoon it was time for another cultural event, this time in one of the iron-age strongholds, a fortress called Gråborg, the largest of them all on the island.

This performance was a dance performance, using two professional dancers and two professional musicians. All the other participants were amateurs from around here. All women, from children to adults.
The play is about a local woman who were betrayed, tortured, convicted and finally killed -and burned, for being a witch, actually the first convicted witch in Sweden 1550. Her fate would later be followed by 300 more women being killed or tortured for witchery. These persecutions didn't stop until 1676, a hundred and fifteen years later, when it was finally stopped. You have to bear in mind that during most of this time, the men were called to fight in various wars all over Europe and the women were left having to take care of the small farms and the children all on their own. It's impossible to imagine the sufferings that went on.

The performance was somewhat slow but strong and the performers did a fine job together. It was all played outdoors, in a place that surely was used in the "trials" when it all happened.
