Semaphore

The Mono Monday challenge theme today is " communication".  I looked through my late husbands collection of cigarette cards for inspiration as I know they cover lots of different subjects.  I came across an album with cards showing  different signals.. As you can see I spelled out the word " BLIP " with the semaphore cards..  Thanks to 60plus for hosting.

INFO .......... Semaphore is a visual method of communication that involves signalling the alphabet or numbers by the hand-holding of two flags in specific positions. It has been described as 'Optical telegraph'. The flags are coloured differently, depending on whether the signal is sent over the land or across the sea.

The system was developed in France in 1790 by Claude Chappe and his brothers. This was the time of the French Revolution and there was a great need for the government to be able to quickly communicate orders and to receive information.  Their first message, on March 2, 1791 read:  “If you succeed, you will soon bask in glory.”

The system of handheld flags was further developed during the early 1800’s when the maritime industry found that the flags were a fast and easy method to communicate between ships.

I went to visit Neil and Luna this afternoon.  Neil wasn't too busy with work so we spent time together watching The Olympics on TV.  We saw the ladies floor exercise final and some of the kayak cross events.  I stayed for a couple of hours before getting a bus to Lidl.  Then another bus to the Metrocentre.... then home.   After unpacking the shopping I sat in the armchair .... and fell asleep.

Later on I watched more Olympics - ladies discus, mens pole vault and track events including the ladies 800 metres where Keely Hodkinson won Gold for GB.

Weather today was dry, warm and windy.

Steps today - 8,826
