Sunshine on Kinghorn Loch

No kidding-on today, time for the serious ecology stuff.

30 years ago it was heavily polluted by "red mud" a waste product from the production of alumina from the aluminium factory based in Burntisland and it leached into the loch from the landfill dumping sites which were roughly in the direction you are looking at in the photograph. This resulted, not surprisingly, in massive fish deaths and the severe impact on the macro-invertebrate life in the loch.

The good news is the leachate was diverted in 1983 and some of the "red mud" solids removed from the loch. It was then left to recover naturally and now supports a diverse range of aquatic plants, macro-invertebrates et al. It is now used as a recreational Carp fishery and if you feel brave enough you can try swimming in it.

The Aluminium Factory no longer exists by the way.
