A Journey Back In Time

I love the Medieval period. I love the links with the past that exist in our buildings and architecture. Shropshire is rich in history and there are so many stories to tell.

Today I sought out a tiny  chapel in the village of Heath, South Shropshire.

Not so much a village as a small community of cottages and farms.

And an exquisite Norman Chapel.

It is in a field, in a quiet corner of South Shropsire and it is still in use as a place of worship and a place of rest.

It has clear Norman origins in the construction and design but has later additions. It has no bell tower and a small number of plain windows, high up in the old stone walls. No stained glass.

Inside is a delight. The walls appear to be coated in a covering of old and flaking white paint. Vandalism from a bygone era.

Below the peeling paint are some remarkable signs of frieze, script and paintings, some of which are over 700 years old.

There are box pews with seats facing forward and backwards, a two tier pulpit and a two bay nave and a two bay chancel.

I am no historian, I still have an awful lot to learn but I know what I like.

And I do like this.

Hauntingly beautiful and very mysterious!
