Gisborough Priory
At least a weeks worth of blips here. I knew I needed to visit, and today we went over to Guisborough for a specific shop. On the way through the town there was a sign in front of St Nicolas Church asking not to park nearby as there was a funeral there today.
However on the way out the sign had gone and it was quiet and there was parking. So we parked up and trotted through the entrance (itself blippable) to discover Gisborough Priory.
Or at least what is left of it. It was originally an Augustinian priory. Maybe from around the year 1119! See the extra. The very knowledgeable English Heritage volunteer was so interesting and informative. The extra is what it would have looked like. I’ve marked on the picture the actual bit that is shown in the blip which is the remaining east end wall.
We would have walked around it more but it was cold, windy and damp, so we will go back - for more blips :-)
For a later date - The Monks Walk, The Cloister, Norman Gatehouse, Knights Grave, The Dovecot - to name but a few points of interest. In the monks walk there are trees even older than the original priory.
Note: spellings are correct. The Priory is without the ‘u’
