Books and writers
Today was the first day of this year's Byron Writers' Festival, which is now held in the charming small town of Bangalow rather than the busy and touristy Byron Bay. Many meaty issues were discussed, including treatment of asylum seekers, holding to account of those in authority and breaking down the mythology surrounding colonial story-telling. All in a relaxed and informal atmosphere, with many distinguished speakers including a Booker Prize winner (Richard Flanagan). It was thoroughly enjoyable and we'll be back again tomorrow for day 2.
