Oh, Joy! Peach Crisp and August Pie Ice Cream!
Here is a little secret I've been keeping: the other day, when I went to the Arboretum (and saw two eagles!), I made a little side trip to Penn State's Berkey Creamery and picked up a box of August Pie ice cream! August Pie is vanilla ice cream, with peaches, nectarines, and red raspberry sauce. As you might guess, this flavor is only available in August! Oh, NOM!
When we went to town on Friday, amid the deluges and road closures and all of that from the hurricane, my husband picked up five half-price peaches at Giant. Once again, the stars align for a special treat: peach crisp and August Pie!
The schedule went like this: I bought the ice cream on Tuesday. He bought the peaches on Friday. On Saturday afternoon, with great love and anticipation, I took four of those peaches and made a very nice peach crisp. (Recipe here!)
This was the snacking scene on this evening: a little dish of peach crisp, topped with August Pie ice cream, and even a fancy drizzle of caramel sauce (this is Smucker's, and a little bit goes a long way).
So here's a question: If I showed up at your front door with this peach crisp and this box of August Pie, and maybe even the caramel sauce for a topper, would you let me in?
Our soundtrack song: John Mellencamp, What If I Came Knocking.
Bonus: a tale of one woman's quest for August Pie.
