In memoriam
I grew up about 15 miles north of Cardiff. One of the things that stands out in my childhood memory is taking the train towards Cardiff, excitingly passing through the impressive mile long tunnel through Caerphilly mountain and shortly afterwards stopping at Cefn Onn Halt which serviced Cefn Onn Park, a beautiful Edwardian country park a few miles from the centre of Cardiff. It was an exciting day out, especially on hot summer days celebrated with a picnic.
The little station closed in 1986, to be replaced by a station half a mile closer to Cardiff and better serving the new housing developments as the city expanded outwards. Today the park remains a wondrous place to visit but most people now arrive by car.
Over the years we have remained frequent visitors bringing first our children and today we brought our grandchildren. It remains popular as evidenced by the many benches scattered around the park bearing plaques dedicated to the memory of those who had loved the beauty and peacefulness of the park.
Many thanks to 60 plus for hosting and suggesting today’s theme for Mono Monday
