Edward Adrian Wilson

I have long had an interest in the journeys of Shackleton and Scott to Antarctica at the start of the 20th century. So it was with amazement, pleasure and awe that I discovered that Edward Adrian Wilson had been born just down the road from where we live in Cheltenham.
Wilson (known as Bill) accompanied Scott on two expeditions. The first in 1901/2 was when the team reached the furthest south anyone had ever reached. The second in 1910/12 was the famous Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole where Scott's team was narrowly beaten by Amundsen's Norwegian team.
Wilson was the chief scientist and Scott's close friend. Scott said "Words always fail me when I talk of Bill Wilson. I believe he really is the finest character I ever met." Wilson and Scott died in their tent, 148 miles from base camp along with their comrade Bowers.
