Whitton
Back blip: This afternoon I drove down to Oxfordshire to prepare for the removals van arriving tomorrow. A short detour took me to the village of Whitton near the Shropshire/ Worcestershire border to visit the tiny 12th century Church of St Mary. Hidden from view by surrounding trees, the church is a remarkably intact Norman structure complete with slit windows and re-purposed Roman brickwork. Inside this narrow and quite dark church lie not one but two wonderful Pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows designed by Edward Burne-Jones and made by William Morris. My blip is a detail from the east window which echoes the local environment, just a couple of miles from Tenbury Wells which, in Victorian times, was known as 'the little town in the orchard'.
