St Cuthbert
The Tuesday Walkers had us exploring the Duddon Mosses and eating lunch in Pam's Cafe in Kirkby in Furness. I learned that the town used to be called Kirkby Ireleth but when the railways came to the town in the mid 1800s to shift slate, the station was called Kirkby in Furness; the town followed suit.
I spotted a St Cuthbert's church so I had to go and investigate. Is it one of the original churches dedicated to the saint after the monks passed with the coffin during their wanderings. Or is it one of the churches that sprang up in the Middle Ages when St Cuthbert enjoyed a revival? The first vicar is listed is a Roger de Kirkby in 1197 and inside that modern door you can see on the outside, is a wonderful old Norman arched doorway. That suggest its an original one and fits the pattern of St Cuthbert churches around the coast of Cumbria. I also learned that this part of Cumbria used to be part of the Kingdom of Strathclyde . Well I never, another Blip learning day.
