Flightless bird
Anniemay has a lot in common with this penguin. She too is a flightless ……..
Late yesterday afternoon she received a message saying that her charity wing-walk, scheduled for lunchtime today, will not go ahead owing to an adverse weather forecast. It’s going to be too windy today.
This is the second time this event has been cancelled postponed. The next available slot is in early October.
A windy aeroplane doesn’t bother her - she’s done free-fall parachute jumps and abseiled off various high things - tall buildings and rock faces. But it seems the organisers are a bit concerned about the plane; “it’s a vintage bi-plane”. What about the vintage jumper? So she’s a bit disappointed.
It’s more than disappointment though; she’s already raised a lot of money for our local hospice - and although people are understanding - it doesn’t stop the guilt.
And now there’s the added complication of her dodgy knee. Because to get into the correct position on the plane, she has to crawl along the wing on her hands and knees. While it’s on the ground, luckily.
She’s now on a list for a knee replacement - early next year with any luck. And she’s managing at the moment by a mix of will-power and painkillers. But they may not work in a month or so.
We talk about alternatives and she mentions ‘the stick’. Apparently, when she watched old cowboy films with her dad, there was always a stick to bite on, when someone needed a bullet removing. So, I’m off to look at my collection of sticks. Hopefully there will be a suitable candidate to add to the medicine cupboard.
