Winter Preparations
Our house is heated by a boiler that runs on electricity so technically we don't need any firewood. However, there are both aesthetic and practical reasons why it's good to have a supply of wood fuel.
We can save electricity, and money, by using the woodburner. We enjoy the warm glow of the stove, and on a cold damp day the dry heat of the woodburner is wonderful.
Electricity is much more reliable these days but there can still be power cuts. Our longest was 4 days but that was in those unreliable times when our electricity arrived via cables strung on poles through the forest. Now those cables are underground so stormy weather and falling trees are not the problem they were. But it is practical to have an alternative source of heat, just in case, and that you could cook on the woodburner is an added advantage.
So today was splitting these dead-tree logs and moving some wood that has been drying for a year and will be ready for burning this coming winter.
It seems a lot of splitting but it tucks away quite neatly, as the extra shows.
