Life through the lens...

The ‘ Calendar House’.

A century before Ann Lister Shibden Valley was Home to another infamous character, John Mitchell ( 1659- 1696) who became the legend of folklore.

His grandfather was a wealthy silk merchant who died in 1645, age 48.
His son inherited Upper Scout Hall but died in 1672 while still a young man.
His son John Mitchell was only 13 when he inherited his father’s estate.
Even as a teenager he had a bad reputation of being wild.
He was the centre of a scandal when at 19 he was alleged to have abducted 15 yr old Mary Wilton and forced her to Mary him.

He had Scout Hall built in 1681. Called a ‘ Calendar House’ 12 bays, 52 doors and ( supposedly) 365 lanes of glass.

He spent all his time gambling, drinking, horse racing, and drunkenness. Was also a violent man. Quick to get his sword out.
His property was transferred to his wife to avoid loosing it to gambling debts.

At the age of 37 his broken body was found at the bottom of a hill near Scout Hall.
Legend said he fell to his death from a balloon, or flying machine he had built.
Other tales speak of him jumping off Beacon Hill with improvised wings that failed.
There was no doubt he was obsessed with flying machines and boasted that one day he would ‘ fly like an eagle’.

After being derelict for many years the house is now undergoing restoration.
A very long job I think.

We loved the walk which was so interesting.
Calderdale has a wonderful history.
However it was the most difficult and strenuous walk we have done for years!
The path up from the valley to the top of the hillside was the most difficult as it had been churned up by the deer. ( I spotted 2 in the distance)
Also went wrong twice.
The route was one given to us by our neighbours, who said it was fairly easy.
Not for us! They are 25 years younger .

This was a recce for a Pudseys Walk next month. I think we will have to do an easy one, just to Shibden Mill Inn and back for some, and the hardy ones can do the more difficult walk.

We just got back in time for me to take a photo of the little train to add to my collage.
( see extra) Thought 4 hours was enough on the ticket but only just made it back although we had only done 4 3/4 miles.

Feel as if we have achieved something, and now enjoying a well earned cuppa.

Collage top left view down Shibden Valley. 1766 House designed by celebrated John Carr of York.
Path over Shibden brook.
Almost chased by these horses.
Towards the end of our walk, A twin flagged path. Worn groves indicates historic use by carts.
The little train.
