Coober Pedy
What can I say?!
I was here 43 years ago and quite honestly it is still the wasteland I remember
The town’s existence is due to large deposits of Opal.
The surrounding landscape is equally dystopian, desolate, and chaotic.
The area is covered with spoil heaps from the thousands of small mines, together with discarded trucks, equipment etc.
Most of the other passengers seemed to find this an interesting and enjoyable “travel experience”. Maybe I should have stayed on the train.
The one redeeming feature of the excursion was seeing Sturt Pea growing wild. The floral emblem of South Australia. See extras
