The old way, but still effective
I owned this Wednesday mostly for maintaining my geocaches. As usual, I did that by walking, as its the best way to go on. On the way I saw this log drive coming to Luukkaansalmi.
Although that's not seem to be the fastess way to get big amount of logs for processing to timber factory, its definitely the most ecological way to do that. The same amount of logs would need tens of trucks and as many people to do the work. Now there were only three mens and three ships.
The first steamship in main image was S/S Hurma built 1902 at Vyborg, Russia. It was last used for work in 1974. Since then it has been used for representative cruises by United Paper Mills company.
There are two more photos of the log drive in the extra section. An interesting situation was also going on at the Lukkaansalmi bridge, where regular health checks were carried out on the bridge's bearings.
In second extra is the large showers, which purpose is to keep the logs moist in a large log field before processing.
