Crossless Cross

We set off from Findhorn after midday, and had a long stop in Nairn for shopping, walking, and food.  As I waited for BB I saw this outside an old building, now the Registry.  I was drawn to the colours of the column.

The plaque at the side says it is The Old Cross of Nairn, and it was moved in 1757 meaning it is older than that.  The elephant in the room is clearly there is no cross anymore.  The Internet has not helped enlighten me as to why the cross is missing, but did say the top was a sundial.  I think I can see another elephant.
