Ralph Crosses, Blakey Ridge
Young Ralph's cross on the left dating from the 18th century, although the base is a lot older and Old Ralph's cross on the right from the 13th century. Both are most likely wayside crosses marking routes across the moor.
We had a great walk from Castleton up Danby Dale climbing to the Ralph crosses on Blakey Ridge. From here, we walked around the head of Farndale, down via Esklets to Westerdale and back to Castleton. A tough 13 miles, the first half into a strong headwind but we were blown back and made it back to the car before the rain started. The heather on the moors is still looking glorious.
