Wood

This is my entry for the Tiny Tuesday challenge of Wood, I hope host MaryElizaR likes it. It is made of wood and helps to make wooden articles. Because wood is so tactile, isn't it, when carved or planed and smoothed, sanded and polished, a thing of beauty to touch and see.

My Maternal Grandfather was a carpenter/cabinet maker; my mother told me that she used to help sharpening the blades of his planes. He lost most of his sight and couldn't continue so none of his tools remain. in the family. This particular example came from the charity shop that our church used to run and bears the name of a church member. It is a spoke shave, a type of plane with narrow blade and wide handles used to make narrow pieces like spokes or chair legs. It is operated by drawing it towards or away from the body (most planes, like box planes, are used away from the body). It measures 24cms end to end.
