On this date in 1882...
...brave Herbert died trying to save two boys who drowned.
On this date in 1927 my father was born. He was a strong swimmer and diver (extra at Prestatyn in c. 1949). He became a policeman. One day when I was a child, I remember a fellow officer bringing him home. He was wearing only his underwear and a towel around his shoulders and was shivering uncontrollably. He had been diving into a flash (flooded mine workings) trying to find a child who had disappeared while swimming there. Eventually his sergeant ordered him to stop and sent him home, not wishing to lose a good officer. The dead child was found by frogmen divers a couple of days later entangled in weed in deep water near where my father had been diving. My mother gave my father hell for endangering his life when he had a young family to look after, but he was devastated that he didn't find the child in time.
