The enigma
Of the Wine Tower which stands on the very edge of the cliffs at Kinnaird Head close to the eponymous lighthouse bearing castle.
The origins of the Wine Tower are uncertain - was it literally Lord Saltoun's Wine store - a watch Tower- a clandestine Catholic chapel or a prison?
According to legend a fair Maiden, daughter of Lord Saltoun, was imprisoned by her father on the top floor of the tower whilst her unsuitable lover was imprisoned on the lower floor into which the sea flooded at high tide. When it did so he was drowned and the heartbroken maiden threw herself down onto the rocks below
Regular application of red paint to the spot where she allegedly met her death keeps the legend alive..
