A fine example of the Ealing school

Note the simplicity of line, the single colour, as well as the overpainting of an earlier work.

The artists – for we must call them that – behind the great majority of these works are unknown, travelling as they did from city to city, in search of patronage from the great lords who funded most or all of their output. Very occasionally work is signed, even more occasionally can we associate those signatures with individuals known through parish and other records. Most, of course, were illiterate.
