A very secret garden
Although the Herteton House garden is open several days each week, most people don't know that it exists. M from next door came to tell me about it, in great excitement, yesterday. She said the paths were flat so Mum could manage them. (She forgot to say that the car park is deep gravel and the paths are very narrow, so neither is suitable for a walker on wheels. We tried!)
Do go and see this hidden gem if you can. It's on the road from Cambo going north and has brown tourist signs to it. There is no website - the owners don't have TV so I'm sure they don't use a computer - but you can find details under some of the garden sites.
Here is the knot garden. There is a 2 storey gazebo positioned centrally on the boundary wall, but sadly the windows don't open and are very narrow, so a photo of the whole knot garden can't be done. This is one side of it. Elsewhere there is a glorious flower garden, a physic garden and a nursery garden. The couple who live here restored the 16th century buildings and created the garden, starting 37 years ago. He told me that "in the summer we work in the garden until 10pm, but in the winter we keep going until 11pm, doing our embroidery". What a labour of love this is.
PS You can buy plants and seeds - and we did!
