Pond Inlet, Canada
Today we spent quite a bit of time in the hamlet of Pond Inlet -- our first stop in Canada. We were taken on a walking tour of the village, although we were told we had to stay with our guide, and no photographs of people or houses were allowed.
A very lonely place to live, I think -- extremely remote, and the winters must be so very long, cold and dark!
The only place we were allowed to photograph was inside the Civic Center, where a fascinating cultural demonstration was put on for us by some of the local people. We marveled at the athleticism of the young men, the throat singing of the women, and learned a little bit about the ways they live, entertain themselves, and how they dress.
This is a shot of the cairn some boys were making. Cairns are used for several purposes -- to mark specially significant spots, to use as guide posts, or for memorials.
I took a lot of pictures during the show, but the internet signal here is v-e-r-y slow!
